White Abarrio dominates his comeback race by over 10 lengths
The 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic Champion White Abarrio dominated his first race back after a 5 month layoff by 10 1/4 lengths in an Allowance OC at Gulfstream Park on November 22, 2024.
Bred and raised by Spendthrift Farm, White Abarrio is the first foal out of the Into Mischief mare Catching Diamonds and is sired by the Tapit son Race Day. Sold as a short yearling to Jose Ordonez for $7,500 at the 2020 OBS Winter Mixed sale, he was then sent to the 2021 OBS March 2 Year Old Sale and was bought by Carlos Perez for $40,000. White Abarrio is owned by C2 Racing Stable, Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz, and Antonio Pagnano.
Now a winner of 8 races in 18 starts, White Abarrio has earned $5,213,350 over four years of racing. He won his first two starts in 2021 at Gulfstream Park, then was third in his final start as a two year old in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. Returning to Gulfstream Park at three, he won his first graded stakes race in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes before his first Grade 1 victory in the Florida Derby. He picked up a few placings in graded stakes races at three, before his career defining efforts at four years old where he won both the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap over that year’s Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish, and the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Winless in two starts since then, White Abarrio is again a winner.
White Abarrio was a step slow at the start of the 7 furlong race on the main track and went three wide into the stretch. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. then powered away to victory by over 10 lengths for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.. The race was won in a time of 1:23.52.
