October 19, 2022
A weanling from the first crop by Vekoma brought a top bid of $150,000 during Monday’s Saratoga Fall Sale, tying him for the overall highest price paid at the auction as well as the top price for any offering by a First-Crop sire.
Stuart Morris consigned the colt, hip No. 196, as agent for Highclere, Amy Rabanal & Constance Wickes, with Glencrest Farm, Dailey Bloodstock, agent the buyer.
“My father and two of his partners bred him and he’s always been a lovely colt,” Morris said.
The chestnut colt is the first foal out of the unraced mare Nice Smile, who is a half-sister to Red Vine, a stakes winner who also finished second in the Cigar Mile (G1). Nice Smile’s dam Murky Waters is a half to millionaire and multiple graded winner Fort Prado.
Regally-bred Vekoma is a son of stalwart stallion Candy Ride (ARG) and his dam is the Grade 1 winner Mona de Momma. Spendthrift Farm recently announced Vekoma’s 2023 fee at $15,000 live foal.
