Alan Porter’s 2025 Breeding Analysis for National Treasure

A brilliant miler, National Treasure is a classic winner of the Preakness Stakes, Pegasus World Cup Invitational and the stallion-making Metropolitan Handicap. He is by the outstanding sire, Quality Road, out of a Medaglia d’Oro mare from a prolific stakes winning family that traces to a sister to Man o’ War.

There are nearly 20 stakes winners by Quality Road and sons out of Storm Cat line mares, including a grade one winner out of a mare by Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg – broodmare sire of a Quality Road line graded stakes winner – Henny Hughes and Cactus Ridge; grandsire of Scat Daddy, himself the broodmare sire of a Quality Road line stakes winner), and graded stakes winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway (who is represented by such as Not This Time, Creative Cause, Eskendereya, First Samurai and Frost Giant), Into Mischief (by Harlan’s Holiday, also broodmare sire of a Quality Road line stakes winner, and himself sire of Majesticperfection and Shanghai Bobby), Stormy Atlantic, Tabasco Cat and Consolidator. Other strains of Storm Cat that could be tried, including Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart and Tale of Ekati; grandsire of Kantharos, Uncaptured and Girvin), Pure Prize, Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Catienus and Sea of Secrets – all Storm Bird/Mr. Prospector crosses, the reverse of Quality Road, who is a cross of Mr. Prospector over Storm Bird’s relative Nijinsky II, as well as Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir and D’Wildcat), Freud (brother to Giant’s Causeway), Discreet Cat (by Forestry, also sire of Shackleford), Bernstein, Bluegrass Cat, Yankee Gentleman, Stormin Fever, Tactical Cat and With Distinction.

From the Danzig branch of Northern Dancer, Quality Road has sired grade one winner Illuminant out of a mare by Polish Numbers and grade one winner Bleeker Street out of a mare by Danzig son Exchange Rate. There are also Quality Road line stakes out of mares by Danzig line horses War Front (sire of The Factor, Summer Front, Declaration of War and Hit It a Bomb) and Hard Spun. Other Danzig line stallions that could be considered here include Belong To Me, Langfuhr (sire of Lawyer Ron), Concerto (sire of Bellamy Road) and War Chant.

Quality Road has an exceptionally strong strike-rate with mares by Dixie Union (by Northern Dancer son, Dixieland Band), getting Champion Caledonia Road and grade one winners Klimt and Salty. Mares by Dixie Union son, Union Rags, could be very interesting as his dam is a Gone West/Nijinsky II cross, like Quality Road. Union Rags is also sure Gone Astray, High Cotton, Grasshopper and Overanalyze.

Quality Road sire Champion Abel Tasman out of a mare by Deputy Minister and the brilliant City of Light out of a mare by Deputy Minister son Dehere (sire of Graeme Hall). On the same cross, there is a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again, also sire of Paynter, Oxbow and Daaher), graded winners out of mares by French Deputy and Salt Lake, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Silver Deputy (sire of Posse, Spring At Last and Badge of Silver).

Quality Road is sire of multiple graded stakes winner Frank Conversation out of a mare by Nureyev son, Unusual Heat, suggesting other Nureyev line stallions such as Theatrical (who has done well under Gone West), Atticus (a Northern Dancer/Storm Cat cross), Alwuhush, Fasliyev, Spinning World and Stravinsky.

Quality Road is sire of the grade two winning juvenile, Road to Victory out of a mare by Tiznow, a son of Cee’s Tizzy from the Relaunch branch of In Reality. Sons of Tiznow include Gemologist (broodmare sire of a Quality Road grade two winner), Colonel John and Tiz Wonderful. The Relaunch line can also be brought in through Honour and Glory (sire of Put it Back), Skywalker, Bertrando and Officer.

Out of mares from the A.P. Indy line, Quality Road and sons have grade one winner Emblem Road out of a mare by Bernardini, and Champion Fierceness out of a mare by Bernardini son Stay Thirsty, with Bernardini also being sire of To Honor and Serve. Multiple grade one winner Bellafina is out of a mare by Malibu Moon, and there are also stakes winners out of mares by Jump Start, Congrats, and Pulpit (sire of  Mineshaft, who’s the sire of Discreetly Mine and Dialed In) and Pulpit (sire of Tapit – who is bred similarly to Bernardini – Sky Mesa, Corinthian and Stroll) and Congrats. Other options include Flatter (a brother to Congrats, and sire of Flat Out and Upstart), Majestic Warrior and Stephen Got Even.

Crossed back over the Mr. Prospector line, Quality Road is sire of grade one winner Roadster out of a mare by Silver Ghost; four stakes winners, three graded from daughters of Smart Strike, and another out of a mare by Smart Strike out of a mare by Curlin, suggesting mares by Lookin At Lucky and English Channel. There is a stakes winner out of a mare by Street Cry (sire of Street Sense and Street Boss), and a stakes winner out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid.

Out of mares from the Fappiano branch of Mr. Prospector, Quality Road is sire of a graded stakes winner from a mare by Broken Vow; three stakes winners of mares by Unbridled’s Song, sire of Even The Score (broodmare sire of two Quality Road line stakes winners), Songandaprayer, Dunkirk, First Defence, Midshipman, Half Ours, Old Fashioned and Rockport Harbor; and two stakes winners out of mares by Empire Maker, sire of Pioneerof the Nile and Bodemeister, and grandsire of American Pharoah, Classic Empire and Cairo Prince.
