Vicar’s In Trouble draws post 1 for Derby 140

Vicar’s In Trouble, bred by Spendthrift Farm and sired by the farm’s leading Third-crop stallion Into Mischief, drew the rail in a field of 20 for Kentucky Derby 140 (G1) on Saturday.

Trained by Mike Maker, the speedy Vicar’s In Trouble will likely have to make a quick move out of the gate to establish a good spot going into the first turn. “Hopefully, we get a good break out of Vicar like we usually do, and we get a good position pretty early,” said Maker shortly after the draw.

Vicar’s In Trouble has shown speed in all three of his wins, including a romping 13-length maiden score Dec. 14 at the Fair Grounds. Maker used the Louisiana path to make his way to Louisville, with wins in the Grade 3 LeComte S., third in the Grade 2 Risen Star S., and most recently a dynamic 3 1/2-length win in the Louisiana Derby (G2).

Vicar’s In Trouble has a lifetime mark of 3-0-2 in five starts, earning $788,900 for owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey. He will be ridden Saturday once again by Rosie Napravnik, who has been aboard the dark bay colt in all five lifetime starts and is seeking to become the first female winner of the Derby.

Into Mischief is the nation’s second-ranked Third Crop sire, with progeny earnings of $1,447,261. His five progeny stakes wins, and a remarkable 19 wins from just 34 starts, leads both categories.
