Vekoma wins tight race to top First-Crop sire list

In a race that came down to the final day of the year, Vekoma bested McKinzie and Tiz the Law to earn the coveted top spot on the 2024 First-Crop Sire list.
The Spendthrift stallion’s progeny earnings of $2,761,547 were approximately $23,000 ahead of McKinzie’s accord to the Thoroughbred Daily News.
Vekoma led the First-Crop list in several other statistical categories. His 39 winners tied the all-time North American record.
Vekoma’s five stakes winners came at five different tracks at distances from 5 ½-furlongs to one mile. Jonathan’s Way was his sire’s top earner and won the Iroquois S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. For the year, Vekoma had 14 stakes horses, five more than any other First-Crop sire.
Vekoma himself was a graded stakes winner in all three years he raced, winning both the Met Mile (G1) and Carter H. (G1) at four, the Blue Grass S. (G2) at three, and the Nashua S. (G3) at two.
Vekoma’s book has topped 200 in three of his four seasons at stud . His 2025 fee is $35,000 S&N.
