Vekoma nominated for Older Male and Male Sprinter Eclipse Awards
January 17, 2021
Vekoma, who will begin stud duties this year at Spendthrift Farm, was named an Eclipse Award finalist in a pair of categories when the nominees were announced Saturday.
The versatile son of Candy Ride (ARG) is nominated in both the Older Dirt Male and Male Sprinter categories.
Vekoma showed his precociousness at two when he won the Nashua S. (G3) at Aqueduct. He would come back at three to win the historic Blue Grass S. (G2).
He saved his best for his 4-year-old season in 2020, when he was perfect in three starts. After a win in the Sir Shackleton S. in March at Gulfstream Park, he dominated the Carter H. (G1) by 7 ¼-lengths, earning a 110 Beyer Speed Figure. He then won the stallion-making Metropolitan Mile (G1) to finish off his year.
Vekoma retired with earnings of $1,245,525 for R. A. Hill Stable and Gatsas Stables. His 2021 fee is $20,000 S&N.
Eclipse winners will be revealed during a virtual Eclipse Awards ceremony hosted by Spendthrift Farm on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. (ET).
