Vekoma colt scorches foes in Gulfstream MdSpWt triumph
August 12, 2024
Forged Steel left his competition reeling with a devastating stretch kick to break his maiden by 8 ½-lengths Sunday afternoon at Gulfstream Park.
The 2-year-old gray/roan is the 14th winner for Vekoma, the most for any First-Crop sire. Also on Sunday Vekoma had the session co-topper at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Yearlings sale when hip No. 386 sold for $300,000 to trainer Christophe Clement. The colt was bred by Cheryl A Prudhomme & Dr. Michael Gallivan.
“I train one Vekoma who I like,” Clement said. “But this is a very live family. One horse just won very well from the same family.”
Back at Gulfstream, Forged Steel turned in the performance of the day in the seven-furlong turf race. He was well in hand as he sat in second for the first half-mile. He took command on his own going into the final turn and widened his margin the rest of the way to win eased up.
Forged Steel is owned by C2 Racing Stable LLC and Mathis Stable LLC and was bred in Kentucky by Richard Wilson.
