Vekoma colt finishes with a rush to score debut win at Aqueduct
September 29, 2024
Vekoma chalked up his 21st overall win, best among all First-Crop sires, on Sept. 29 at Belmont at the Big A when Super Swift came home a 2 ¼-length maiden special weight winner over a sloppy racetrack.
The bay colt, who broke from the inside post in the six-furlong race, sat just behind the leaders in third for the first half-mile, then switched off the rail in upper stretch to make his run. He found his best stride in the final furlong and easily took command to win going away.
A homebred for R. A. Hill Stable, the winner is trained by George Weaver. Super Swift is the second foal out of the stakes winner Super Marina.
September was an excellent month for Vekoma’s juvenile runners, led by Iroquois S. (G3) winner Jonathan’s Way and First State Dash S. winner It’s Hammertime, and also Grade 1-placed Vixen. Vekoma leads all First-Crop sires with six stakes horses and his $1.44 million in progeny earnings is second-best among his peers.
