Thrilling St. Louis Derby goes to Into Mischief’s Tabeguache
August 27, 2023
Tabeguache scored his first stakes win in dramatic fashion with a head-bobbing victory over Slip Mahoney in the $250,000 St. Louis Derby on Aug. 26 at FanDuel Racing.
A 3-year-old son of Into Mischief, Tabeguache was making his stakes debut in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile race off two straight victories at Indiana Grand. Tabeguache got a rail trip for the first six furlongs before moving off the fence to go around the fading pacesetter Billy Jack.
Slip Mahoney, who like Tabeguache is trained by Brad Cox, got the jump on his stablemate at the top of the stretch and had a two-length lead with a furlong to run. Tabeguache was able to run him down and get his nose on the wire first, winning officially by a head.
Tabeguache is now 3-1-0 in five starts and has banked $201,650 for owner Jeff Drown. The winner was bred in Kentucky by Kindred Stable, Inc. and is the first foal out of More Mojo.
Tabeguache is Into Mischief’s 19th black type winner this year. The Spendthrift stallion currently leads the General Sire List and is the leading sire of 3-year-olds this year.
