Thanksgiving week kicks off with three winners and new stakes horse for Mitole
November 20, 2023
Mitole, currently the nation’s leading First-Crop sire, got Thanksgiving week off to a superb start when he tallied three maiden winners and a new stakes horse on Nov. 19.
The Spendthrift stallion registered two maiden winners at Churchill Downs, including one TDN Rising Star, a third at Del Mar, while his new stakes horse, Typhoon Fury, placed in the Central Park S. at Aqueduct.
Carbone earned Rising Star honors after his eight-length maiden special weight win at six furlongs. Carbone was making his debut for his breeder/owner team of Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, and came flying out of the gate to take the lead immediately. He was pressed by Goldbrick through a half-mile in :45.77, then shook clear at the top of the stretch and pulled away for a convincing win in a swift 1:09.84 on a fast track [WATCH RACE].
Carbone, who is one of Mitole’s 26 individual winners, hails from the family of graded stakes winners Street Babe and Richwoman.
A few races earlier on the card, Stone Harbor was also a front-running winner, scoring by three lengths at 1 1/16-miles. The dark bay colt races for Meg & Mike Levy and Jordan Wycoff, and was bred by Charisse Rivers.
Later in the afternoon at Del Mar, Feisty Mitole was a three-quarter length winner of a five-furlong turf maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies. The bay filly sold to her owners Gary Barber and Richard Pell for $160,000 at the OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in training in April. She was bred in Kentucky by Brandywine Farm.
Mitole’s 2023 progeny earnings currently stand at $1,945,684, nearly $100,000 ahead of fellow Spendthrift stallion Vino Rosso. Mitole’s 2024 fee was recently announced at $15,000 S&N.
