Teena Ella the first winner for champion Beholder
February 13, 2023
Teena Ella became the first winner for Spendthrift’s four-time champion Beholder when the homebred 3-year-old filly won a six-furlong turf maiden special weight on Feb. 12 at Santa Anita Park.
The bay filly, a daughter of War Front, stalked the pace for a half-mile before tipping out three-wide into the stretch. She drove past the pacesetters and won with authority by 1 ¼-lengths in 1:09.42 on a firm turf course.
The winner is trained by Richard Mandella, who also conditioned Beholder to win Eclipse Awards as the 2012 2-year-old Filly, 2013 3-year-old Filly, 2015 Older Mare, and 2016 Older Mare.
Beholder, who is a half-sister to Spendthrift’s champion sire Into Mischief, has a 2-year-old filly by Bolt d’Oro and a yearling colt by Curlin.
