Tamara the star of Bolt d’Oro’s Breeders’ Cup duo
November 1, 2023
Bolt d’Oro, who has more than 20 stakes horses this year, has two entries on Friday’s Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita Park, highlighted by Tamara, the favorite in the $2 million Juvenile Fillies (G1).
Undefeated Tamara, a Spendthrift Farm homebred, is out of the farm’s multiple champion Beholder. She has been dynamic in both her starts to date, including a 6 ¾-length win in the Del Mar Debutante S. (G1). Friday’s 1 1/16-mile race will be her first start around two turns. Trained by Richard Mandella, who also conditioned Beholder, Tamara will be ridden by Mike Smith and breaks from post 7 in the field of 13. The Juvenile Fillies is race 6 at 5:40 pm ET.
Later in the day, Bolt d’Oro’s Fulmineo will make his third start on the grass in the $1 million Juvenile Turf (G1), which drew a full field of 14 2-year-olds for the one-mile trip. Fulmineo, owned by Mark B. Grier and Starlight Racing, broke his maiden on the grass in early September and came back with a rough-trip second in the Pilgrim S. (G2) at Belmont Park. The bay colt was bred by Country Life Farm and Starr of Quality LLC.
The Juvenile Turf is the final Breeders’ Cup race of the day, race 9 at 7:40 pm ET.
Bolt d’Oro was the champion First-Crop sire of 2022 and is currently third on the Second-Crop list. His 2024 fee was recently announced at $60,000 live foal.
