Stitches becomes freshman sire Vekoma’s fourth debut MdSpWt winner
June 10, 2024
Red-hot freshman sire Vekoma was represented by his fourth debut winner when Stitches won a Maiden Special Weight at Woodbine on June 9th, 2024.
Bred by CEC Stables LP, the bay colt was sold as a yearling for $41,324 USD under the Hill N’ Dale consignment at the 2023 Canada-Bred Yearling sale to current owners Tucci Stables. Stitches was sent out by trainer Sid C. Attard and ridden by jockey Eswan Flores. Stitches is out of the Silent Name mare Silent Sinner.
Stitches broke well and fought for the early lead before settling behind and stalking the leader Kokomo. Closing the gap around the turn, Stitches then dueled with Kokomo and pulled away in the stretch by 2 1/4 lengths to break his maiden on debut. Stitches ran 58.28 second for 5 furlongs over the local All-Weather track.
Vekoma now has 4 debut winners from 5 starters, which is the most winners by a first-crop sire in North America so far in 2024. Stitches became his lead money earner, bumping Vekoma’s total progeny earnings to $114,981 to date.
