Spendthrift homebred Malibu Pier second in G1 La Brea
December 26, 2010
Malibu Pier, owned and bred by B. Wayne Hughes, was a clear second in the $250,000 La Brea S. (G1) Dec. 26 at Santa Anita Park, becoming the latest stakes horse for Malibu Moon, who ranks third on the 2010 General sire list with over $8.5 million in earnings.
Malibu Pier broke last in the field of ten in the seven furlong La Brea, which is restricted to 3-year-old fillies. Still eighth after a half-mile, she moved up along the inside around the turn, then continued her rally from fourth approaching mid-stretch to be a clear second behind Switch, who set a stakes record of 1:20.33.
Since breaking her maiden in her debut at Hollywood Park on July 15, Malibu Pier has won a pair of allowance races and also finished a close-up fourth in the Grade 3 Harold Ramser S., also run at Hollywood. She is now 3-1-0 in five starts, earning $141,200.
A chestnut filly, Malibu Pier is out of the French mare Blue Moon, who was also owned by Hughes and won the Grade 2 Buena Vista H. and finished second in the Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup (G1), both on the turf.
