Seven Into Mischief juveniles on Experimental Free H’cap
February 3, 2017
Into Mischief has a total of seven 2-year-olds on The Jockey Club’s recently-released 2016 Experimental Free Handicap, the most of any stallion other than last year’s leading sire Tapit.
The Jockey Club Experimental Free Handicap, published each year since 1935, is a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypothetical race at 1 1/16 miles. The list or horses eligible for weighting included any 2-year-old male or female that started in a graded or listed stakes in the United States and Canada in 2016.
Into Mischief’s top horse of either sex is the colt Practical Joke, a two-time Grade 1 winner of the Hopeful S. and Champagne S. last year who was weighted at 122 pounds, just four off the top number assigned to Classic Empire and the second-highest for any main-track performer still in training as a 3-year-old in 2017.
The Spendthrift stallion’s other colt to make the list is the up-and-coming Cool Arrow, who took the $300,000 Remington Park Springboard Mile in December, his second stakes victory of the year.
Into Mischief has a total of five fillies weighted on the Handicap, topped by Live Oak Plantation’s Let It Ride Mom, who won or placed in three stakes at Woodbine. Others included Golden Mischief, a four-time winner last year, including two stakes, and Sister Nation, who was stakes-placed in her first start of 2017.
