Race Day filly scores impressively at Churchill Downs
June 28, 2019
First-Crop sire Race Day tallied his second winner on June 27 when the 2-year-old filly Josie won a $95,000 maiden special weight race in front-running style (VIDEO).
Hustled out of the gate from post 2, the gray/roan filly assumed command in the first 100 yards, carving out fractions of :21.26 for the quarter-mile and :45.01 for the half, then widened her lead in the stretch to win by 2 ¾-lengths in 1:11.29 on the fast main track.
Josie, who sold for $170,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old sale, is owned by Steve Landers Racing. She was bred by Spendthrift Farm from the Awesome Again mare Spirited Away, also the dam of multiple graded winner Prospective (Malibu Moon). Josie also has a yearling half-sister by Into Mischief.
Race Day is part of Spendthrift’s Safe Bet program, which assures breeders that a stallion’s first crop of two-year-olds will have at least one Graded/Group stakes winner in 2019, or the breeder will be completely relieved of the stud fee for his or her impending foal in 2020.
