Olazabal aces maiden special weight test at Turfway
December 10, 2022
Leading First-Crop sire Bolt d’Oro notched his 25th winner of the year on Friday night when Olazabal prevailed by a neck in a six-furlong maiden special weight race at Turfway Park.
The win put Bolt d’Oro over the $2.5 million mark in progeny earnings, ahead of Good Magic and Justify for the top spot on the Freshman Sires list. The Spendthrift stallion, who will stand for $35,000 in 2023, also leads the list by black type horses with 14 and graded stakes horses with seven.
Olazabal, trained by Eric Foster, was second out of the gate, but soon took command and led the rest of the way. He valiantly held off late charges by Santorini and Retained to get the win in 1:10.12 on the synthetic surface.
The winner is owned by Doug Miller and William Wargel and was bred by Susan Casner. The dark bay is out of Derby Eve, whose siblings include the multiple Grade 1 winners Colonel John and Mr. Hot Stuff.
