No Cents extends winning streak to three in stakes debut
November 15, 2020
The nation’s No. 1 Third-Crop sire Goldencents got his sixth stakes winner of the year Saturday at Laurel Park with No Cents’ victory in the $100,000 James F. Lewis III S.
The 2-year-old colt was making his stakes debut following victories in a maiden special weight and allowance race, both at Monmouth Park.
No Cents got a very heady ride from Trevor McCarthy in the six-furlong Lewis. Early on, he took up a spot on the rail just behind post-time favorite Dalton, tracking him through a quarter-mile in :22.05. No Cents continued to follow Dalton around the turn before McCarthy swung his mount three-wide into the stretch. He ran down the leader and was pulling away in hand late to win by 1 ¼-lengths in a very snappy 1:09.16 on a fast track.
“I definitely wanted to leave a little something in the tank and not overdo it with him. He’s a 2-year-old so hopefully we’ll have a bright future with him,” McCarthy said. “When we came past the five-sixteenths pole, I was just being patient with him. I knew I had a ton of horse underneath me and I was just kind of seeing where [Dalton] went.”
No Cents is now three-for-four lifetime and has earned $149,500 for his owner/breeder duo of Isabelle de Tomaso and Hope Jones.
Goldencents has had a banner year with his third crop of runners. Led by the graded stakes-winning pair of By My Standards and Mr. Money, he leads the Third-Crop list by progeny earnings, winners, wins and graded stakes winners. A son of two-time leading General Sire Into Mischief, Goldencents will stand the 2021 season for $15,000 S&N.
