Mr. Money looks to take top prize in Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1)
October 29, 2019
Goldencents’ brilliant 3-year-old colt Mr. Money will try to duplicate his sire’s feat when he goes postward in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Goldencents was a two-time winner of the race before embarking on his stud career, and is still the only horse to accomplish the feat in the race’s 12-year history.
After leading all First-Crop Sires in 2018 by winners with 29, Goldencents leads this year’s Second-Crop Sire list by both stakes wins, with eight, and progeny earnings, with $4.7 million to date.
Mr. Money is his sire’s leading earner and won four straight graded stakes by an average of five lengths from May through August. Trainer Bret Calhoun had considered the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) for his stable star, but opted for the Mile’s more suitable distance.
Mr. Money, who was fourth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) as the first Breeders’ Cup starter for his sire, drew post four in Saturday’s 10-horse field. Bred by Spruce Lane Farm, Mr. Money is owned by Allied Racing Stable and Spendthrift Farm, who recently bought into the colt. Plans are for him to race in 2020.
