Goldencents’ 3-year-old colt Mr. Money scored his second straight graded stakes blowout win on Saturday evening at Churchill Downs with a 6 1/2-length win in the $150,000 Matt Winn S. (G3) (VIDEO).
Winner of the $400,000 Pat Day Mile (G3) on Kentucky Derby Day, Mr. Money is now 3-2-0 in eight starts and has earned $491,220 for Allied Racing Stable and trainer Bret Calhoun.
Goldencents is the nation’s leading Second-Crop Sire by winners (34), stakes winners (3), stakes wins (4) and progeny earnings ($2,143,921).
Grade 1 winner Knicks Go broke on top in the 1 1/16-mile Matt Winn, with Mr. Money taking up the second spot. Content to track the pacesetter through a half in :47.80 and six furlongs in 1:11.35, Mr. Money took over at the head of the lane and drew off through the stretch to win decisively in 1:42.48 on the fast main track.
“The way this horse was training after the Pat Day Mile, we had an idea he’d run a big race. (Jockey Gabriel Saez) rode him perfectly tonight and he’s proving his talent, that’s for sure,” said Calhoun.
Calhoun indicated that the Indiana Derby (G2) might be next on the agenda for Mr. Money, and he would put his stablemate and fellow Goldencents 3-year-old By My Standards, winner of the $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2), on a different schedule.
Pedigree notes from the TDN:
Mr. Money, bred by Spruce Lane Farm, is the first black type performer for his young Tiznow dam Plenty O’Toole, who also has juvenile colt Mr. Kidd (Palace) and a yearling filly by Awesome Again who sold as a weanling for $190,000 at last year’s Keeneland November sale. The mare’s granddam produced Well Armed (Tiznow), winner of the 2009 G1 Dubai World Cup, as well as the dam of 2017 GI Maker’s 46 Mile S. American Patriot (War Front).
