Mor Spirit’s first winner graduates in style at Woodbine
July 1, 2022
Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Mor Spirit sired his first winner on June 30 when his 2-year-old colt Velocitor cruised to a 7 ½-length victory at Woodbine.
Velocitor was away from the gate very quickly and dueled with Confusing for the lead until hitting the top of the stretch, when the dark bay shook clear of the field. He strode out powerfully through the lane to win going away in 58.55 seconds on the synthetic main track.
The winner is trained by Kevin Attard and owned and bred by Al and Bill Ulwelling. Velocitor is out of four-time stakes winner Polar Plunge, who is a half-sister to graded winner Shakopee Town.
Mor Spirit, who himself sold for $650,000 to Michael Lund Petersen as a 2-year-old, was a Grade 1 winner that year in the Los Alamitos Futurity. After winning the Robert B. Lewis S. (G3) at three, he was at his best as a 4-year-old, winning three stakes, capped by the Metropolitan H. (G1), which he won by 6 ¼-lengths and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 117.
Mor Spirit is standing the 2022 breeding season at Spendthrift for a fee of $5,000 S&N.
