Monomoy Girl wins second career Eclipse Award
January 29, 2021
Monomoy Girl’s undefeated 2020 season earned her a second Eclipse Award during Thursday’s virtual ceremony when she easily outdistanced finalists Midnight Bisou and Serengeti Empress to win the Older Female division award. The now 6-year-old won the 3-year-old Filly honors in 2018.
Last year’s stakes victories came in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1), La Troienne S. (G1) and Ruffian S. (G2), as well as a mid-May allowance victory to begin the campaign. That race came after a layoff of some 18 months, making last year’s accomplishments more remarkable.
The chestnut mare raced for Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stable last year. Following the Breeders’ Cup, she was purchased by Spendthrift Farm for $9.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Spendthrift said at the time that she would remain in training for 2021, under the care of regular conditioner Brad Cox.
Monomoy Girl has breezed several times at Fair Grounds during January, and according to Cox, will likely make her first start this year in the Feb. 15 Bayakoa S. (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
