Monomoy Girl continues winning ways in Bayakoa S. (G3)
March 1, 2021
Monomoy Girl’s first start in her new silks was delayed two weeks because of weather, but the two-time champion came back on top once again with a victory in Sunday’s $250,000 Bayakoa S. (G3) at Oaklawn Park.
Now racing for My Racehorse Stable, Spendthrift Farm LLC, and Madaket Stables LLC, the six-year-old began her 2021 campaign with a two-length win in Sunday’s 1 1/16-mile contest. Kept in the three path most of the trip by regular rider Florent Geroux, Monomoy Girl avoided traffic and potential kickback over what was a very sloppy racetrack. Finite and Our Super Freak were in front early, with Monomoy Girl just behind them. Geroux urged his mare on coming into the stretch, and she forged to the front and came home a comfortable winner in 1:45.92 over the off going.
“It was a great trip,” said Geroux. “It set up great from the start with the outside post and short field. I let the horse in front of me do the dirty work and I just tucked in behind, on the outside, which was the smart thing today with the track condition. When I asked her turning for home, she gave me what has all the time. She always delivers so it’s easy to appreciate a champion.”
Monomoy Girl has now won 14 times in 16 starts, with two seconds. With seven Grade 1 wins, she has earned $4,576,818.
Though trainer Brad Cox did not say where Monomoy Girl would run next, the Bayakoa serves as a local prep for Oaklawn’s richest race for older dirt females, the $1 million Apple Blossom H. (G1) April 17.
