Mitole filly holds sway in Kentucky Downs maiden special weight
September 3, 2023
Mitole’s 11th winner from his first crop came Sept. 3 at Kentucky Downs when the 2-year-old filly Love to Eat held off a pair of late closers to win a $157,000 maiden special weight contest by three-quarters of a length.
Love to Eat, who was making her first turf start after a pair of dirt outings, tracked the early leaders in third, holding that spot until upper stretch, when she easily went by True Princess to take command. Sierra Sky came from far back but could not catch the winner, who finished the distance on the firm turf in 1:22.82.
Love to Eat was bred by Joe, John and Karen Mulholland and is owned by Paradise Farms Corp., David Staudacher, Nice Guys Stables and Steve Hornstock. Trainer Mike Maker purchased the bay filly on behalf of her owners for $230,000 at the OBS March 2-year-old sale. Love to Eat is the first foal out of Awesome Figure and is from the family of champion 2-year-old colt Lord Avie.
Mitole now trails only fellow Spendthrift stallion Maximus Mischief on the First-Crop sire list by winners and is third by progeny earnings.
