Mitole brings home Eclipse Award for top Male Sprinter
January 24, 2020
Mitole’s nearly unblemished record in 2019 earned the bay colt an Eclipse Award as the nation’s top Male Sprinter at the Eclipse Awards ceremony Jan. 23 at Gulfstream Park.
Mitole, who begins his stud career this year at Spendthrift Farm, won six of seven starts in what was his final year of racing. He had four Grade 1 wins in 2019: the Churchill Downs S., the Met Mile H., the Forego S., and the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, which virtually assured him of earning the Eclipse.
His 112 Beyer Speed Figure earned in the Breeders’ Cup was the best of his career and one of eight triple-digit figures he achieved in his 14-race career. With 10 wins and never finishing worse than third in any race, Mitole retired with earnings of $3,104,910.
Mitole raced in the colors of Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt. He will stand the 2020 season for $25,000 live foal, stands and nurses.
