Miss Temple City takes Matriarch (G1) to cap incredible weekend for her sire
December 4, 2016
Miss Temple City’s game victory in Sunday’s $300,000 Matriarch S. (G1) wrapped up a brilliant season for the 4-year-old daughter of Temple City, who had a remarkable weekend in his own right with Annals of Time capturing the Hollywood Derby (G1) on Saturday, at Del Mar as well.
The Matriach’s wild finish had three fillies within a head of each other on the wire. Miss Temple City was a nose better than Roca Rojo (IRE), with Stays in Vegas a head back in third. The trio took different paths before the thrilling finish (VIDEO).
Stays in Vegas set out for the lead right away, carving out comfortable fractions of :48.04 for the half-mile and 1:12.26 for the six furlongs with a 1 1/2-length lead. Meanwhile, Miss Temple City was always just a few lengths back in third while in the three-path most of the time. Edgar Prado got her in high gear in the stretch to pass Stays in Vegas and just hold off Roca Rojo, who came from eighth to grab second.
The final time for the mile on the firm turf was 1:35.16.
Miss Temple City has had an historic 2016 with victories over colts in both the Makers 46 Mile (G1) and Shadwell Turf Mile (G1). With Sunday’s win, she is now 6-3-2 in 16 starts, with earnings of $1,453,038. She is owned by The Club Racing LLC and is trained by Graham Motion.
