Mia Mischief steps up to take Eight Belles S. (G2)
May 4, 2018
Mia Mischief held off a late bid from Talk Veuve to Me by 1 ¾ lengths to win the $200,000 Eight Belles (G2) on May 4 at Churchill Downs.
The win was the first graded stakes score for the 3-year-old daughter of Into Mischief and comes on the heels of her dominant score in the Purple Martin S. last month at Oaklawn Park.
Mia Mischief made the lead early on, laying down fast fractions of :22.21 and :44.21, then carried her speed through the stretch to never be seriously threatened at any point.
Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Mia Mischief covered the seven furlongs in 1:21.84 over a fast main track.
“She seems to improve in every start,” said Asmussen. “I saw during the middle of the race on the Big Board that she was well within herself and she carried herself even on the gallop out way in front.”
The victory was worth $121,520 for owners William and Corinne Heligbrodt, Heider Family Stables and Madaket Stables and increased Mia Mischief’s earnings to $342,320 with a record of 7-4-3-0.
