Mia Mischief dominates $150,000 Purple Martin S.
March 24, 2018
Mia Mischief’s 8 1/4-length win in Saturday’s Purple Martin S. at Oaklawn Park came shortly after Battle At Sea won her stakes debut in Fair Grounds’ Crescent City Derby, giving Into Mischief a Saturday stakes double.
Mia Mischief broke from post six in the eight-horse field and was four-wide on the backstretch, just off the leaders, who went the first quarter-mile in a very quick :21.46. Mia Mischief ranged up and hit the front just before entering the stretch, then drew off in the lane and was eased up in the final sixteenth. She still stopped the timer in 1:09.65 on the fast main track.
“We have a lot of confidence in her. I knew she was going to be pretty fit for this race,” said winning rider Ricardo Santana, Jr. “Today, she fit unbelievable and we had a perfect trip. We turned for home and she came home pretty good. She was much the best today.”
The winner is owned by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt and upped her earnings to $220,800. Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Mia Mischief’s dam Greer Lynn is a sister to four stakes winners. Heiligbrodt purchased the filly for $300,000 out of the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Florida March Sale of 2-year-olds.
