Malibu Moon filly continues roll in Silverbulletday S.
January 21, 2017
Farrell’s facile win in Saturday’s $150,000 Silverbulletday S. at Fair Grounds moved the 3-year-old Malibu Moon filly one step closer towards the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in early May at Churchill Downs.
Farrell already has two wins over the Churchill Downs surface, including the Golden Rod S. (G2), a race she won by six lengths over Thanksgiving weekend.
Trained by Wayne Catalano for her owner/breeder Coffeepot Stable, Farrell was all business in the 1 mile and 70 yard Silverbulletday, stalking the pace set by Gris Gris for six furlongs, then assuming command to draw clear late while in complete authority.
“This is a very classy filly,” jockey Channing Hill said. “She’s bred to be a good horse and the whole barn has done a good job getting her to this level. She shut off really nicely for me, took a few deep breaths down the backside and then punched home when [Untapped] came outside of me.”
“It went accordingly,” Catalano added. “Channing thought (Gris Gris) would have some speed, so I told him we would just go to the front and sit right off her. That’s what we did. You want to wait until mid-stretch here before you really worry. At that point, she was looking nice and Channing was sitting pretty good.”
Farrell is now 3-0-1 in five outings and has banked $241,357. Out of the stakes winner Rebridled Dreams, Farrell is a sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Carpe Diem, as well as another Grade 1 winner in J. B.’s Thunder.
Farrell is Malibu Moon’s third stakes horse of first three weeks of 2017. His 3-year-old colt Gormley, winner of the recent Sham S. (G3), is one of the leaders on this year’s Triple Crown Trail.
