Lord Nelson filly rolls to double-digit debut victory
July 23, 2021
Basking turned in a sparkling career debut Friday at Gulfstream Park, bounding to a 10 ½-length victory in a six-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-old fillies.
After sitting several lengths off the lead early on, the dark bay showed tremendous acceleration going into the turn as she rolled past the leaders with a quarter-mile to run. She left nothing to chance as she ran away from the field in the stretch and was eased up late to cover the ground in 1:12.02 over a very wet racetrack.
Basking was bred by Spendthrift Farm and is the third foal out of multiple stakes-placed Anahauc and through her third dam is related to Grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady and Grade 2 winner Dream Play.
Basking is owned by Peter Brant and sold for $100,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling sale.
Basking is Lord Nelson’s second winner from his first crop of runners. His first, Bueno Bueno, came back to win on Friday as well, taking an Ellis Park allowance for his second victory in as many starts.
