May 31, 2022
Kalypso, a Grade 1-winning daughter of Brody’s Cause, returned to the winner’s circle with a gritty effort in the $100,000 Memorial Day Sprint S. Monday at Lone Star Park [WATCH RACE].
Now in the Steve Asmussen barn, 4-year-old Kalypso showed her class in Monday’s six-furlong affair. She pressed Our Iris Rose through a half-mile in :45.56 before taking over the lead in upper stretch. Becca’s Rocket made a bid for the win in the final furlong, but Kalypso repelled her with something left in reserve, winning by three-quarters of a length in 1:10.71 on the fast main track.
Kalypso is owned by the partnership of David A Bernsen LLC, Gainesway Stable, Rockingham Ranch & Chad Littlefield. Monday’s win upped her earnings to $569,878. Her previous stakes wins came in the LaBrea S. (G1) and Santa Ynez S. (G2), both in 2021, and the Anoakia S. as a 2-year-old.
Bred by Spendthrift Farm, Kalypso is out of the Malibu Moon mare Malibu Cove, who is a half-sister to multiple graded winner Prospective. Malibu Cove’s recent offspring include the Hit It a Bomb 3-year-old colt K P McCovey Cove, a Mor Spirit 2-year-old colt named Quick Hammer, a Jimmy Creed yearling, and a 2022 colt by Authentic.
