Champion Jaywalk romps by nine in $300,000 Delaware Oaks (G3)
July 7, 2019
Cross Traffic’s champion filly Jaywalk rolled to a nine-length victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Delaware Oaks (G3), putting the filly on track for a solid start to the second half of 2019. She earned a 96 Beyer – the fastest two-turn Beyer by a 3-year-old filly in a Graded stakes race this year.
The 3-year-old filly’s win was her third graded stakes score, to go with victories in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and Frizette S. (G1), and upped her earnings to $1,611,500.
Jaywalk was given a brief break after the May 3 Kentucky Oaks (G1) before Saturday’s front-running score. Breaking sharply from post five under Joe Bravo, Jaywalk went right to the lead. After a half-mile in :47.77 and six furlongs in 1:10.72, she drew off in the stretch to win easily in 1:43.21 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.
“We just wiped the slate clean, gave her a little bit of time, freshened her, and went back to what we did last year,” trainer John Servis said of last year’s champion. “The old routine: the two-minute licks and putting those long quicker miles in her, and she responded to it.”
Servis said the tentative plan was to send Jaywalk to another Grade 3 event, the Monmouth Oaks, before tackling the Grade 1 Cotillion over her home strip of Parx Racing.
Jaywalk, who is owned by D J Stable LLC and Cash Is King LLC, was bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds and sold for $190,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
