Into Mischief’s Sovereignty on Derby Trail after impressive Street Sense S. (G3) victory
October 27, 2024
Sovereignty became Into Mischief’s 16th graded stakes winner of 2024 on Oct. 27 with a dynamic, come-from-behind victory in the $200,000 Street Sense S. (G3) at Churchill Downs.
Though he was still a maiden coming into the Street Sense, Sovereignty had run very well in his two prior starts in New York and was made the post time favorite in Sunday’s 1 1/16-mile contest for 2-year-olds.
After breaking from the outside in the field of nine, Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado moved to the rail and settled at the back of the field. The bay colt was unhurried for the first six furlongs before being asked to run midway on the final turn. He came into the stretch five or six-wide and full of run, gliding past the entire field with ease and won going away by five lengths.
“It’s a true honor and testament to (owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum) to let us develop these horses as 2-year-olds and get them ready to go in even bigger races as 3-year-olds,” said Michael Banahan, Director of Bloodstock for Godolphin. “He trained very impressively in New York and it’s not the easiest thing to bring a horse into a stakes race to break their maiden. It’s very special for us all to win a race like this and hopefully get him some experience for some even bigger races as a 3-year-old next year here at Churchill Downs.”
Sovereignty earned $119,280 for his first career win and improved his record to 1-1-0 in three starts, with earnings now at $143,280. He also earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby series that will determine the preference list for the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1).
