Into Mischief’s millionaire 3yo Mandaloun aces Haskell prep
June 14, 2021
Juddmonte Farm’s homebred Mandaloun, most recently the narrow runner-up in a controversial Kentucky Derby, proved best in Sunday’s Pegasus S. at Monmouth in a prep for the $1 million Haskell Invitational-G1.
The talented son of Into Mischief swept to the lead turning for home and safely held off Weyburn under regular rider Florent Geroux, running the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.63 over a local main track after breaking poorly from the gate.
Trained by Brad Cox, Mandaloun won the Risen Star-G2 at Fair Grounds earlier this season after adding blinkers, and his second-place run to Medina Spirit in the Derby could improve depending on a future ruling on the result of that race.
Mandaloun officially becomes his champion sire Into Mischief’s newest millionaire with Sunday’s win, increasing his earnings to $1,051,252 from seven starts. He began his promising career undefeated as a 2-year-old from a pair of starts.
Now, he’ll be seeking a win in the prestigious Haskell, with his sights on a second-half campaign in 2021 that could make him his sire’s second consecutive 3-year-old champion, after Authentic took 2020 honors.
