Helium guided the field through a half-mile in a moderate :48.69, with Fulsome still in the back as they entered the far turn. With no choice but to go around horses, Florent Geroux had Fulsome four-wide as he made up ground to be head-to-head for the lead entering the stretch.
O Besos, who was fifth in the Derby, offered only token resistance in upper stretch as Fulsome powered clear to win in hand in 1:42.88 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.
“I was pretty confident he could take some dirt in his face and got him to relax early,” Geroux said. “I was just hoping they were going fast up front after the slow break. He was able to go past those horses easily to win.”
Fulsome, trained by Brad Cox, started his career with three outings on the turf. Fulsome’s dam Flourish is a half-sister to seven-time Grade 1 winner Sightseek and two-time Grade 1 winner Tates Creek.
