Into Mischief surpasses Tapit to set single season earnings record
November 24, 2020
In a year full of career highlights for Into Mischief, the Spendthrift stallion set another record over the past weekend when he eclipsed Tapit to set a North American record for the most single season offspring earnings by a sire.
As of the completion of racing on Nov. 23, his earnings stand at $19,998,855. Tapit’s previous mark, set in 2017, was $19,914,317.
“He’s a remarkable horse,” said Spendthrift General Manager Ned Toffey. “There’s not a lot left to say about him. He’s shown that he can get any level of horse and at the same time is very consistent. That’s what has allowed him to get to the level he has gotten to. He is so good mentally. Such a high percentage of the mares he breeds result in, first of all, a live foal, and, second of all, a good sound foal. They get to the racetrack and they perform. He’s been prolific at doing that and the offspring have been prolific at doing their job from a consistency standpoint and a brilliancy standpoint. We are proud to be associated with him.”
Into Mischief has also had a total of five TDN Rising Stars this year, including eventual Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) winner Gamine and Bourbon S. (G2) winner Mutasaabeq.
His list of graded winners is topped by Authentic, winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and leading candidate for Horse of the Year honors. Authentic will join his sire at Spendthrift for the 2021 breeding season.
In addition to the earnings record, Into Mischief leads nearly every category on the 2020 General Sire list, with 28 black type winners, 58 black type horses, 26 graded stakes horses, three Grade 1 winners, six Grade 1 horses, and 178 winners with 266 wins. All totals are as of Nov. 23.
In the sales ring, Into Mischief’s offspring were among the most sought-after of any sire, with five lots bringing at least $1 million at the Keeneland September Yearling sale.
After breeding 248 mares, his largest book, in 2020, Into Mischief is standing the 2021 season for $225,000.
