Got Stormy scores historic Fourstardave S. (G1) victory
August 15, 2021
Two years after she became the first and only female to win the Fourstardave S. (G1) in track record time, Got Stormy scored a repeat win the 2021 renewal Saturday at Saratoga.
This year’s win came in the silks of Spendthrift Farm, now the co-owner with My Racehorse Stable. She sold for $2.75 million at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale to Spendthrift.
As expected, Blowout (GB) went to the lead right away, with Whisper Not (GB) close behind, and Got Stormy taking up a spot in third some four lengths off the lead. She held her position until midway on the final bend, when she went three-wide to make her bid. She caught the pacesetters and blew by them with a furlong to go, then comfortably held off the late charge of Set Piece (GB) to win by 1 1/2-lengths in 1:33.09 on the firm turf.
“He always turned it around here at Saratoga,” Spendthrift Farm general manager Ned Toffey said about the legendary Fourstardave, “and she does the same thing. We were just talking about how much Got Stormy is like him. These are the kind of races we envisioned for My Racehorse as well.”
The Fourstardave is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, guaranteeing the 6-year-old a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) in early November at Del Mar. Got Stormy finished second in the 2019 Mile.
When asked about the Breeders’ Cup, Toffey said, “That’ll be the goal.”
Saturday’s win upped Got Stormy’s record to 12-5-3 in 30 starts, with earnings of $2,398,403. She now has won seven graded stakes and 10 black type events overall.
