May 8, 2021
First-Crop sire Gormley was represented by his second winner Friday at Churchill Downs when the 2-year-old filly Guajira won her debut going 4 ½-furlongs.
Owned and trained by noted 2-year-old conditioner Wesley Ward, the bay filly tracked in second most of the trip before taking the lead in the final sixteenth of a mile to win by a half-length.
Guajira was bred in Kentucky by Dr. Oscar Benavides. She is out of the Henny Hughes mare Zulia, who is a half-sister to millionaire and Grade 1 winner Seattle Smooth.
Gormley, a son of Malibu Moon who was a Grade 1 winner at 2 and 3, has two winners from his first three starters and is currently atop the First-Crop Sire list. His 2021 fee is listed at $5,000 S&N.
