Goldencents’ Vodka Gimlet gets second stakes win of ’22
February 27, 2022
Vodka Gimlet overcame major traffic trouble to run down Lightning Struck in the final strides of the $75,000 Big Drama S. on Saturday evening at Delta Downs (WATCH RACE).
The 3-year-old son of Goldencents is two-for-two this year, with both victories coming in added-money races. In seven career starts, he has three wins and a pair of third, with earnings of $147,645 for Ellen Epstein.
Vodka Gimlet was last of seven when the field went under the wire the first time, then moved up along the rail to fourth as he rounded the first turn. He inched closer on the backstretch, then found himself behind a wall of horses on the final bend. Jockey Tommy Pompell had no choice but to take his mount five-wide into the stretch. With a clear path in front of him, Vodka Gimlet kicked in gear and bested Lightning Struck by a neck on the wire.
The winner was bred by 5 B Farm Inc. Vodka Gimlet’s dam has also been responsible for the stakes winner Governmentshutdown and stakes-placed Ganges.
Goldencents, who topped the 2021 Fourth-Crop Sire list with $7.8 million in progeny earnings, is the early leader on the 2022 Fifth-Crop list with just shy of $1 million in earnings and six stakes horses.
