Free Drop Billy gets first stakes winner
July 18, 2022
Spendthrift Farm stallion Free Drop Billy was represented by his first stakes winner on July 17 when Free Drop Maddy scored a front-running victory in the $150,000 Texas Thoroughbred Association Futurity at Lone Star Park (WATCH RACE).
The bay filly, owned by Landon Jordan, was a close second in her June 10 debut at Churchill Downs. She proved up to the task of taking on a full field of stakes competition on Sunday. She went right to the front from post 2, carving out fractions of :21.94 and :46.06. She led the field into the stretch and was never threatened in the lane, winning by 1 ¾-lengths.
Free Drop Maddy is trained by Bret Calhoun and has won $102,700 in her two races. She was bred by Clear Creek Stud LLC and sold for $200,000 at this April’s Texas Thoroughbred Association 2-Year-Olds in Training sale.
Free Drop Billy, a Grade 1 winner at two in the Keeneland Breeders’ Futurity, is participating in Spendthrift Farm’s Safe Bet Program for 2022.
