Malibu Moon’s multiple graded stakes-winning filly Farrell won her first start against older fillies and mares on Saturday at Churchill Downs with a one-length victory in the $200,000 Chilukki S.
Winner of Churchill’s Golden Rod (G2) last year at two, and Rachel Alexandra S. (G2) and Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) this past spring, Farrell is now 6-0-1 in 10 starts and has earned $727,077 for her owner/breeder Coffee Pot Stables and trainer Wayne Catalano.
Coming out of Churchill’s one-mile chute, Farrell was close up early and took over the lead for good just before going a half-mile, then maintained at least a length lead all the way to the wire. She completed the distance in 1:35.90 on a fast track (VIDEO).
“She’s a hyper filly so when we brought her back off the layoff we knew she may get worked up,” Catalano said, referring to Farrell’s fifth-place finish in the Sept. 23 Dogwood S. “That’s exactly what happened. She did us so well today and ran great. The real Farrell is back.”
Malibu Moon’s 12 stakes winners have accounted for 20 stakes wins this year, with progeny earnings of $9.6 million.
