F-T Saratoga Sale day 2: $700K colt tops day for Malibu Moon
August 9, 2017
The Aug. 7-8 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearlings sale wrapped up on Tuesday evening with another banner day for Malibu Moon, topped by a $700,000 colt and four lots selling for an average of $491,250.
His single lot that sold Monday evening for $650,000 brings his overall sale average up to $523,000.
Tuesday’s star for his sire, hip No. 163, was the fifth-highest priced colt to sell at the session. Consigned by Four Star Sales, agent, the colt went to Spendthrift Farm LLC.
“We obviously love Malibu Moon. We stand him and [his MGISW son] Gormley, so we are fully invested,” said Spendthrift’s Ned Toffey. “No matter who (their purchase) is by, he is just a really, really nice horse. To start off in a regional market for a $3,000 stud fee and do what Malibu Moon has done off of just a maiden win is really pretty remarkable. At the same time, he is as well-bred as horses come and as good looking as horses come. It just shows that a good stallion can come from anywhere and he’s sure been a good one.”
Out of the unraced Street Cry (Ire) mare Cloud Jumper, the bay hails from the family of champions Gold Beauty and Dayjur, graded stakes winner Buffum and multiple stakes winner Stormy West.
Malibu Moon’s top filly of the evening was hip No. 172 consigned by Paramount Sales agent and went to Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock for $500,000. The filly’s second, third and fourth dams are all stakes winners. The prestigious family includes champion Countess Diana and Grade 1 winner Exongenous.
