Expensive Malibu Moon filly prevails in Saratoga debut
July 23, 2016
Bowie, a $750,000 weanling buy at Keeneland November in 2014, proved best on Friday at Saratoga with a gutsy half-length maiden special weight victory at 5 1/2-furlongs.
The 2-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon is named for the late David Bowie, and like the musician, sports one blue eye.
Shooting out of the gate, Bowie went right to the front to open a two-length lead in the first furlong. Pulling even further ahead under her own power, she was up several lengths in the stretch, then kept to task by Florent Geroux to hold off the late charge of Special Risk.
Bowie is owned by LNJ Foxwoods and was purchased on their behalf by Solis and Litt. She is out of the stakes-placed Unbridled’s Song mare Life Lesson, whose dam Wander Mom won the My Charmer S. (G3).
Malibu Moon is once again a top-10 sire in 2016, with six black type winners and three graded stakes winners, including the brilliant filly Carina Mia (Grade 1 Acorn S.).
