Dominus colt blazes 9.3, co-fastest in OBS history
April 19, 2019
A Dominus colt caught everyone’s eye at the OBS Under Tack show on Thursday when he turned in the week’s fastest furlong work in a blistering :09 3/5 seconds (VIDEO).
While the time is significant because it marked the fastest of 696 two-year-olds to breeze an eighth at OBS April, it also has historical significance. A dozen two-year-olds hold the eighth-of-a-mile record of 9.3 since the training track’s Safetrack all-weather surface was installed back in 2007. In the last 5 years, there have been 8 to breeze that time and sell. The average sale price was $790,000.
Consigned by John Brocklebank’s TIP Thoroughbred Investment Possibilities, the bay (hip 706) already named Speedy Justice, is out of Super Selle, a half-sister to graded stakes winner T.D. Vance.
“We didn’t name him, but boy they sure hit it on the head, didn’t they?” Brocklebank told the TDN. “I had heard a couple of friends of mine talk favorably about Dominus (and) I had my eye open a little bit more for one of them, and it didn’t take much imagination on this horse. He presented himself and we fell in love with him. We followed him up and we were fortunate to take him home (from last year’s Keeneland September Yearling sale).”
“We were expecting him to go fast,” Brocklebank continued to explain after the breeze. “Maybe not a :9 3/5, but we kind of had him earmarked for a :9 4/5. And he just doesn’t tire. It’s like somebody put a cold-fusion tank in him or something. He just does it so easy and gets along with himself so well, so we expected him to work fast.”
The OBS Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in Training is slated for April 23-26, with the Dominus colt to sell Thursday, April 25.
