Doppelganger powers to victory in the $150,000 Battery Park S.
July 9, 2023
Into Mischief’s Grade 1 winner Doppelganger surged to the lead at the top of the Delaware Park stretch to win Saturday’s $150,000 Battery Park S. by a widening 2 ¼-lengths.
The 4-year-old colt, who won the Carter H. (G1), his now 5-1-1 in 12 starts and has earned $539,900 for SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC and Robert Schoenfarb.
Facing just two foes in the 1 1/16-mile race, Doppelganger and Ridin With Biden dueled briefly after the break before a headstrong Ridin With Biden took command. Doppelganger and jockey Jevian Toledo bided their time until hitting the quarter pole, when they swept past the pacesetter, who offered little resistance as Doppelganger pulled clear in the stretch and won handily in 1:44.36 on a fast track.
“He is a nice horse,” said Toledo. “You can do anything with him. He is very versatile. You take him to the back, put him in front or put him in close. Whatever you want to do with him, you can do with him. There was not a lot speed, so I just put in the position to win the race today.”
Bred by WinStar Farm, Doppelganger sold to his owners for $570,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearlings sale.
Doppelganger is one of Into Mischief’s 16 black type winners and eight graded winners this year. The four-time reigning champion sire, Into Mischief once again leads the General Sire list with nearly $14 million in progeny earnings to date, nearly $5 million more than any other North American sire in 2023.
