Cross Traffic the champion Freshman Sire of 2018
January 3, 2019
Jaywalk capped off a fantastic year for her sire Cross Traffic with a victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) to solidify her sire’s spot atop the 2018 First-Crop Sire list with $2,115,603.
Cross Traffic is just one of three freshman sires with progeny earnings in excess of $2 million, joining the elite ranks of Tapit (2008) and Uncle Mo (2015), who also both had 2-year-old Breeders’ Cup winners in their first crops.
Jaywalk was by no means Cross Traffic’s only top-class horse. He had graded stakes winners in three countries, five stakes winners overall, and eight total stakes horses on the year. Those numbers compare very favorably to the likes of top 2-year-old sires Flatter (6SW, 9SH), Quality Road (5SW, 7SH) and fellow Spendthrift stallion Into Mischief (5SW, 9SH).
Jaywalk, who could be an Eclipse Award winner later this month, won four of five starts, including the Frizette S. (G1), and banked $1,384,200. She was a $190,000 purchase at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
Cross Traffic’s 2019 fee was recently announced at $25,000 live foal.
