Cinco Charlie, GSW 2YO by Indian Charlie, retires to Spendthrift

October 24, 2016

Cinco Charlie, a Graded SW at 2, retires as Indian Charlie’s only 7-time SW at stud

Cinco Charlie, a Graded stakes-winning juvenile and seven-time black-type winner by Indian Charlie, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, KY as the newest participant in the Share The Upside program for 2017.

“Cinco Charlie is a fast, precocious, and great-looking son of Indian Charlie. We’ve seen the success of Uncle Mo, and we are very high on Liaison and the offspring we’re seeing from him. So, it’s a sire line with a lot of upside, and Cinco Charlie has won more stakes races than any Indian Charlie at stud,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift General Manager. “We’ve had success with one-and-done Share The Upside opportunities with stallions like Temple City, and we believe there is a lot of similar potential with Cinco Charlie that breeders will like.”

The Share The Upside fee for Cinco Charlie will be $5,000 for just a single-year commitment in 2017, and breeders will earn a lifetime breeding right beginning in 2018 after having one live foal and paying the stud fee. For those not interested in the Share The Upside program, Cinco Charlie will also be offered for $5,000 on a standard stands and nurses contract.

Campaigned by owners Bill and Corrine Heiligbrodt and trainer Steve Asmussen, Cinco Charlie was a leading 2-year-old of his crop, capturing his debut at Churchill before winning the Bashford Manor S. (G3) in his second start. He went on to win four stakes races at four different racetracks as a juvenile. Cinco Charlie carried that momentum into his 3-year-old season by stretching out to an 8 ½-length victory in the one-mile Riley Allison S. at Sunland. He returned to Churchill to prove best in the William Walker S. over multiple Grade 2 winner Blofeld, and then was nailed on the wire when runner-up in a top field of sophomore sprinters in the Woody Stephens S. (G2) on Belmont Stakes Day, contesting a fast pace throughout and losing by a nose at the wire.

This year at four, Cinco Charlie zipped 1:09 1/5 to take the six-furlong Duncan Kenner S. at Fair Grounds, earning a 103 Beyer and his seventh career stakes win – the most ever by a son of Indian Charlie. He retires with earnings of $608,920 from eight total wins in 18 starts.

Cinco Charlie has taken up residence at Spendthrift and is available for inspection. He hails from the stakes-placed Marquetry mare Ten Halos, a half-sister to Graded stakes winners My Pal Charlie, Bwana Charlie, and Bwana Bull.
