Smiley Sobotka made his first route race try a winning one Sunday at Keeneland with a two-length victory in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight affair for 2-year-olds (VIDEO).
The chestnut colt, who was making his second lifetime start, is the fifth winner for top-10 First-Crop sire Brody’s Cause, who already has three stakes horses, topped by Iroquois S. (G3) Sittin On Go.
Smiley Sobotka was hustled from post 11 by Joe Talamo and took up a spot in third just a few length from the front for the first six furlongs. He engaged Windcracker nearing the top of the stretch and after a brief battle, drew off for the win.
Smiley Sobotka was bred in Canada by Track West Racing and his dam Dance Thewayyouare won the Vanity S. (G1).
The winner is trained by Dale Romans for Albaugh Family Stables, the same connections who campaigned Brody’s Cause. Albaugh purchased Smiley Sobotka for $185,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearlings sale.
