“Breathtaking” Del Mar outing for Dominus 2YO
August 7, 2016
Straight Fire’s 10 1/2-length maiden special weight victory Saturday at Del Mar left his foes reeling in his wake, with the 2-year-old Dominus colt never looked like he got out of a strong gallop despite setting very fast fractions.
Straight Fire, who was second to a TDN Rising Star in his July 17 debut, earned that same distinction with Saturday’s scintillating performance. Very quick out of the gate, Straight Fire was well off the fence under Kent Desormeaux. He blazed through a quarter-mile in :21.18 and then began to open up on the field in the turn, rolling through a half-mile in :44.38. The margin just kept increasing down the stretch, with Desormeaux still motionless as the bay with the distinctive white blaze cruised under the wire to stop the timer in 1:14.94 for the 6 1/2-furlongs (VIDEO).
Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, Straight Fire was Dominus’ most expensive yearling of 2015 when he sold for $250,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Summer Yearling sale, going to prominent buyers Solis and Litt Bloodstock, who bought the colt on behalf of his owners Jungle Racing LLC et al.
Straight Fire is one of three winners out of Tricky Indy, whose half-sister is Spectacular Bid S. (G3) and Swale S. (G3) winner Confide.
