B. B. Dude Gives Shakin It Up First Winner
June 1, 2018
Spendthrift Farm’s Grade 1 winner Shakin It Up sired his first winner on June 1 when B. B. Dude captured a $51,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs in his career debut.
In the colors of owner Jerry Durant, B. B. Dude broke alertly and raced in third position early, just off the dueling leaders. He swung three-wide on the far turn and took command at the head of the lane before going on to score by three-quarters of a length over stablemate Carter Cat, stopping the clock for the five-furlong event in :59.37. Ricardo Santana Jr. piloted B.B. Dude for trainer Steve Asmussen.
A $105,000 yearling acquisition by Durant, B. B. Dude was bred in Kentucky by Sally Thomas and New Dawn Stable and is produced from the Unbridled’s Song mare Purrfect Song, a sister to Grade 2 winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Santa Catarina.
A precocious juvenile, Shakin It Up broke his maiden as a 2-year-old at Santa Anita. He won the San Vicente S. (G2) in 1:22.48 in his 3-year-old bow and earned his biggest career victory in Santa Anita’s Malibu S. (G1), stopping the clock in a lively 1:20.53, earning a 106 Beyer, one of the highest Beyers by a 3-year-old that year. As a 4-year-old, Shakin It Up stretched out around two turns to win the Strub S. (G2), and the three-time Graded stakes winner retired with career earnings of $664,982.
Shakin It Up is by Champion Sprinter Midnight Lute out of Silver Bullet Moon, a daughter of two-time champion and Hall of Famer Silverbulletday. He stands for $5,000 live foal.
